The Central Government has appointed Lokhande IAS officer Prashant Sitaram as the new Chairman of the board Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), giving him the post on additional basis while he continues to serve in the Ministry of Home Affairs.The appointment follows the order that was revised by the Committee on Cabinet Affairs (ACC) on July 2, 2026. Under the latest arrangement, Lokhande will continue to be the Additional Secretary in the Department of Home Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, while also leading the main body of education in the country’s schools until he becomes the permanent Chairman or other orders are issued.

Lokhande replaces Rahul Singh, who has been posted to the agriculture and farm welfare department as Additional Secretary.The Center also appointed Varun Bharwaj as the new Secretary of CBSE. He replaces Himanshu Gupta, who was the secretary of the board.The appointment comes as part of a major shake-up in the administration. The latest order replaces the government’s previous notification issued in June, when Lokhande was appointed as the full-time Chairman of CBSE. The revised plan puts him in a dual position, allowing him to continue in the Ministry of Home Affairs while temporarily heading the CBSE.The government has made it clear that it will fill the post of CBSE Chairman until a permanent candidate is appointed or until further instructions are given.
Who is Lokhande Prashant Sitaram?
Lokhande Prashant Sitaram is a 2001-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre with an academic background in engineering and industrial management.He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pune before completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai. His administrative experience covers a number of important functions in the government.
