His job was to monitor the sale of drugs, ensure compliance and take action wherever he was found.Back in 2009, when he was posted to Ropar, he visited the chemist shop of Balwinder Singh. During the inspection, the authorities found several drugs that are often misused. According to the official documents, the necessary documents for this drug could not be produced. Following Neha’s orders, they canceled the shop’s license.For him, it was another legitimate decision taken during the service. He continued to serve the department and rose through the ranks. As of 2016, they have become the Zonal Licensing Authority. At home, she was also a young mother and the daughter of a retired army captain who fought in the 1971 war.When work follows you beyond the officeOn March 29, 2019, nearly a decade after the license was revoked, Balwinder Singh entered Neha Shoree’s office in Kharar carrying a licensed .32-bore revolver.According to the police, he shot Neha in the middle of his work before killing himself. Neha was injured while being taken to the hospital, where the accused died soon after.A police investigation found that he harbored a grudge against his actions years earlier. The investigators said that Neha had to testify in the court. The Special Investigation Team later submitted a closure report, which stated that no one else was responsible for the crime.However, Neha’s parents continue to question the investigation. They have approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, complaining about the probe and asking for an independent probe. The Supreme Court, at various stages, has sought answers from the investigating authorities on the issues raised by the family.An important point to remember for anyone seeking government jobsFor students planning careers in the civil service, police, regulatory agencies or other government departments, Neha Shoree’s story provides a lesson that no book can adequately teach.The Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude paper in the Civil Services Examination is about integrity, accountability, impartiality and courage.
