Slippery hands: Radha Yadav, Nandani, Yastika drop four catches in six overs as India’s fielding woes continue in T20 World Cup | Cricket News
India’s fielding woes continued in the crucial Women’s T20 World Cup clash against Bangladesh on Thursday, with the team taking four catches in the powerplay.Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and elected to bat. India, coming into the match on the back of a defeat against South Africa, made two changes, bringing Radha Yadav and Renuka Thakur for Prema Yadhav and Arundhati Reddy. Bangladesh retained the same XI that beat Pakistan in their previous game.
With India, South Africa and Bangladesh all tied on four points after three matches, separated only by net run rate, the contest took on more significance in the race for the semi-finals. Australia, meanwhile, top Group 1 with four wins from four matches. The first reprieve came in the third over when Juairiya Ferdous bowled a sweep off Shree Charani. The ball bounced towards fine short leg and hung in the air long enough for Yastika Bhatia to run across from fine short leg and take a dive. She caught a finger but couldn’t finish the catch.India then wasted another chance in the next over. Juairiya pulled a short ball from Renuka Singh straight towards deep midwicket, where Radha Yadav was stationed. The chance came at a comfortable height and Radha got both hands, but the ball slipped out. For a fielder of Radha’s reputation, it was an unusual miss and it came on the back of the two catches she had dropped off Marizanne Kapp during India’s defeat in South Africa. The misses don’t stop there. In the fifth over, Sobhana Mostary drove hard at a delivery from Shree Charani and cut the ball towards cover. Nandani Sharma moved quickly to his left and dived, putting both hands on the ball but could not complete the catch.A ball later, Nandani was back in action. Juairiya tried a slog sweep and the top edge flew towards short third. Nandani covered the ground quickly and took a dive, but the ball didn’t stick, giving Bangladesh another life. The sequence left India frustrated as four chances fell in the space of 11 deliveries. The missed opportunities helped Bangladesh recover from the early pressure and end the powerplay at 40/1 after six overs.Falling catches also continued a worrying trend for India. Against South Africa in their previous match, Radha had put away two chances offered by Marizanne Kapp, who went on to score an unbeaten 81 and play a key role in a six-wicket win.
