Legendary playback singer S. Janaki she was laid to rest with full state honors at her family’s farmhouse at Kaniyanahundi on HD Kote Road in Mysuru on Sunday evening. The iconic singer died last July 12 at the age of 88 after suffering multiple cardiac arrests while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru. His mortal remains were kept at Maharaja’s College Grounds before the last rites, where thousands of admirers, members of the film fraternity, musicians and political leaders gathered to pay their last respects. The funeral was held in his hometown of Mysuru in his later years, as per his last wish.
Apsara the emotional tribute to his grandmother
In statements to the media during the last rites, S. to eatApsara’s granddaughter paid an emotional tribute to the legendary singer. “This is a great loss, not only for our family, but for the entire nation and the entire world,” he said, The Indian Express reports. Recalling Janaki’s unmatched talent, Apsara added, “She had the most expressive kind of singing. Everyone who listens to her music knows that.” He also described his grandmother as truly unique, saying: “My grandmother was unique. Anyone who knows her will tell you how special she was. He was a remarkable talent.” His heartfelt words reflected the deep admiration and love the family continues to have for the music legend.
A loving grandmother beyond the legendary voice
While the world hailed S. Janaki as one of India’s greatest playback singers, Apsara said she would always remember her as family. “I will remember her as my grandmother, kind, generous and full of love and laughter,” he shared. Apsara also spoke about the life lessons she got from Janaki, saying they extended far beyond music and fame. “I feel honored to have been her granddaughter. I learned so much from her, not only as a celebrity, but as a grandmother,” she said. He also fondly recalled Janaki’s deep affection for animals, describing it as one of the qualities he most admired.

To end her tribute, Apsara had a few words for all country music fans. “She will be greatly missed, but she lives on forever through her music. All we have left is this. We are forever together. There is no goodbye,” he said. In her career spanning more than six decades, S. Janaki sang more than 40,000 songs in many Indian languages and was awarded four National Film Awards along with many other accolades. As tributes pour in from all corners of the country, one thing is clear: while the legendary singer may be gone, her legendary voice lives on.
