A 2022 Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) graduate in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Mukul Singh has moved from research analyst to Director of Science at Microsoft Research in just four years.Based in Redmond, Washington, Singh currently leads the science and technology side of the Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform that powers Microsoft 365. According to his LinkedIn profile, his work focuses on reliable AI, foundational models, modeling and post-learning. He also serves as a technical advisor to the company’s senior leadership on the long-term AI strategy.
From internship to leadership
Singh joined Microsoft Research as a researcher in January 2022 while completing his engineering degree IIT Delhi. After graduating at the end of that year, he was appointed as an Associate Researcher in the PROSE team, where he worked on improving software experiences through AI.He was promoted to Researcher in June 2024 and became Principal Researcher in July 2025. In March 2026, he became the Chief Scientific Officer, leading the research of AI and artificial intelligence solutions for Microsoft.Its work supports products such as GitHub Copilot, Excel Copilot, Visual Studio and Power Query, technologies that reach more than a billion users every month.
Research base at IIT Delhi
Before joining Microsoft full-time, Singh worked as a Research Assistant at CART at IIT Delhi between December 2020 and December 2021. He also completed a Data Science course at American Express in Gurugram in the summer of 2021.His teaching and research experience at IIT Delhi, followed by successive research positions at Microsoft, shows the work that has been done with continuous work in artificial intelligence and software development.At the time of the discussion around dismissal and hiring continues to slow in the technology sector, Singh’s career progression shows that opportunities remain for professionals who develop specialized skills, pursue research skills and continue learning in fast-growing fields such as AI.
