Kunal Kemmu has spoken candidly about the unpredictable nature of an acting career, admitting that long periods without work and creative commitments are realities most actors have to deal with. The actor, who won accolades for his directorial debut ‘Madgaon Express’ and was recently seen hosting Prime Video’s reality series ‘The Alliance’, reflected on the constant struggle to balance artistic fulfillment with professional survival.Kunal said actors are often forced to choose between waiting for meaningful roles and accepting projects simply to stay active.“Sometimes you face the challenge of thinking, ‘I don’t really feel creatively fulfilled or satisfied doing this part.’ But at the end of the day, I haven’t worked in a long time, so I’m just doing it because ultimately I’m trying to do what I need to do. I think that’s something that most actors struggle with, especially when you’re not doing enough work or there’s not enough work. There is often a battle between what you really want to do and the opportunities in front of you,” said Kunal in an interview to News18. Expanding on the dilemma, the actor explained that each performer ultimately has to decide whether to wait for the perfect opportunity or make the most of what comes their way.“Do you do nothing and wait until you get what you want? Or do you say, ‘OK, let me make the most of what I have, even if it’s not 100% creative for me?’ more and pursue this, and I knew what was coming with it. So yeah, I think that’s the only part that’s challenging for me, and I know it’s the same for a lot of other actors.”When asked if he has gone through phases of not working, Kunal said that these ups and downs are a recurring part of an actor’s life and can return at any stage of the career.“No, it happens all the time. I mean, I’m busier now. But there were times in my life where I went for almost two years where I was just working. Then a movie doesn’t work, and sometimes I’ve been home for six months, eight months, or even a year. And this phase can return.”Kunal also revealed that despite repeated advice from industry experts, he has never believed in relying heavily on PR or networking to advance his career. Instead, he has preferred to stay true to his instincts.“It just didn’t work for me. The advice is you have to do a lot of PR and really have the PR machinery behind it, which is very important. Or even showing up to places, being in the right circles, hosting people or sending gifts. I don’t think that’s bad advice. It’s not important to me because it never was. I’m an instinctive person and I do what feels right.”Stressing that skill ultimately matters more than visibility, the actor said he has always focused on improving his craft rather than chasing popularity.“And I honestly believe in working your craft more than anything else. Because if you’re a craftsman and someone needs you, it’s like a carpenter, right? If I need a good table made, I’ll find a good carpenter. I’m not going to find the most popular carpenter.”
