PUNE: A Pune-based study on an Ayurvedic treatment that can reduce the need for repeated eye injections in diabetic retinopathy patients was presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2026, one of the world’s largest conferences on vision research, held recently in Denver, US.The study evaluated Timirex-R, an oral nanotechnology formulation developed by Rasyani Biologics, as a treatment option for patients with diabetic retinopathy. This study was presented by Dr. Yogesh Bendale, who represented the research of traditional medicine in India at the conference which was held by about 11,000 ophthalmologists and vision scientists from all over the world.The study was conducted at Rasayu Ayurveda Hospital by a team consisting of Dr. Yogesh Bendale, Dr. Avinash Kadam, Dr. Ketaki Jagtap and Dr. Prajakta Pote.Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness in diabetics and is often treated through repeated intravitreal injections to reduce retinal damage and preserve vision. However, these injections often require multiple visits to the hospital and can cause physical, emotional and financial problems for patients.According to the researchers, the study included patients who showed little improvement despite receiving many eye injections. They said optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging showed a reduction in retinal inflammation and structural improvement after oral drug administration.The research team reported that about 90 percent of the patients being monitored did not need to repeat the eye injection during the study. He said that no major problems were observed. The invention has received patent protection in the United States and several other countries.Commenting, Dr. Yogesh Bendale said the research shows the potential of combining traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern scientific methods. “The nomination of this research to ARVO provides an opportunity to showcase Indian research on the international scientific platform and encourage further evaluation of such therapies through evidence-based research,” he said.
