SS Rajamouli gives update on 'Varanasi'; confirms Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra's major IMAX action sequences have been completed

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has shared a major production update on his upcoming film ‘Varanasi’. The director, who is currently shooting his ambitious Rs 1.4 billion film, took a break from production to head to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where he shared updates on the lineup and more.

Rajamouli confirms that the action scenes of ‘Varanasi’ have been completed

Speaking to Variety, Rajamouli confirmed that all the large-scale IMAX action sequences of the film have now been shot and shared that the film is progressing at a steady pace. Sharing an update on the film, he shared, “What I can say is that we’ve completed a major part of the shoot, all the big action sequences of the big shows are done. We’re (now) doing the smaller, interconnected scenes, so hopefully by September, maybe a little bit into October, we should be done shooting.

Rajamouli also clarified that the decision to shoot the film stars Mahesh Babu i Priyanka Choprabecause IMAX didn’t alter his creative vision. He said: “From the beginning, we knew that the sequences that were conceived would be better justified [the] IMAX format – we haven’t changed anything just because of the format.”The director earlier revealed that the tall vertical aspects of the epic 20-minute Ramayana battle scene, demanded a larger format to encompass the true scale and scope of the sequences and mythological settings. Therefore, the team decided to go ahead with the film in IMAX.

‘Varanasi’ Release Date

The upcoming time travel film is set to release in April 2027. According to reports, the film, with a budget exceeding Rs 1 billion, is said to be one of the most expensive films ever made in India.Rajamouli’s previous films including RRR and the BaahubaliThe blockbusters The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion have been widely credited with boosting the scale and ambition of Indian cinema.
