Sana Saeed opens up about battling bulimia

In her social media post, Sana described growing up with no real understanding of eating disorders, saying that because no one around her ever talked about it, she had no framework to recognize what she was going through, so she carried it “in silence and alone” for a long time. She recalled the specific fear that shaped her daily life as a child, the anxiety of hiding food, of being caught, of being seen as “overeating.” It took reading about the condition, she said, for things to finally fall into place, though admitting the truth to herself, that what she had was bulimia, took much longer to come to terms with.In the emotional video, Sana recalled how food anxiety shaped her childhood and left her feeling isolated: “I can’t want to hide and eat constantly or be worried that he’s going to come into my room and think I’m overeating. I remember when I started reading the book, I was like… because you’re so scared that you finally know what the problem is. And you don’t want to face it.She admitted that accepting the diagnosis was one of the hardest parts of her journey: “I remember being like, ‘OK, it’s kind of an eating disorder. But it’s not that,’ because it was so hard for me to admit that I had bulimia. Never heard of it growing up. I wish I had heard about it, so I would have gone straight to the problem.”

‘You are not alone’: Sana Saeed explains why she chose to share her story

Sana has explained that discovering the word bulimia for the first time gave her a way to finally understand what was happening to her, although the shame of admitting it, even in private, took years to resolve. She said she decided to share her story because someone else might be going through something they don’t have a name for yet, and she wanted them to know that it does have a name and that they are “not alone.”She closed her note on a hopeful note, sharing that she considers herself fully recovered and has never felt more at home in her own body. She encouraged anyone struggling to reach out to someone they trust or seek qualified eating disorder support in their area.Alongside the video, Sana shared a heartfelt note explaining how the absence of conversations about eating disorders left her suffering in silence: “I didn’t know I had an eating disorder for years. Not because I wasn’t suffering, but because I had never heard the words. Growing up, no one talked about it. There was no language for what was going on, so I carried it in silence and alone for a long time.”She said discovering information about bulimia helped her finally understand her condition: “When I finally read about bulimia I understood for the first time what was wrong with me. And even then the shame of admitting it, even to myself, took years to overcome.”Sana said she chose to speak out in hopes of helping others who may be facing similar struggles: “I’m sharing this because somewhere out there, someone is carrying something that doesn’t even have a name yet. And I want them to know, it has a name. You’re not alone. And there is a way to get through it.”The actor also shared an encouraging update on his recovery while encouraging people to seek professional support: “I am fully recovered and have never felt more at ease in my body or my life. If you’re having trouble, reach out to someone you trust or find eating disorder support in your area. You deserve real help from someone qualified to give it.”
