Latest government steps on paper leak row
Meanwhile, according to the ANI report, the Union Cabinet on Friday approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, aimed at strengthening the anti-paper leak law as protests continue across the country. Sources indicate that the bill is likely to be presented to Parliament on Monday, July 27.In a separate development, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has fired 47 officials in a major crackdown, with sources indicating that legal and criminal action will also be taken against some of them. The move is said to be part of a comprehensive overhaul of the NTA, which has faced several controversies over paper leaks. This is the sixth major decision taken in 24 hours under the Prime Minister Narendra Modiwho has warned that those who harm the future of the country’s youth “will not be spared”.
Background of the protests
The national capital has witnessed prolonged protests over the issue, with activists Sonam Wangchukwho joined the demonstrations, ending his 26-day hunger strike the night before. Opposition parties have also supported the protesters’ demands.PM Modi had earlier stressed that nothing is more important than the welfare and future of the youth, announcing the creation of fast track courts for swift and strict punishment in paper leak cases. In a post on X, he said he has ordered the authorities to take all necessary measures, describing it as part of continued efforts to safeguard the interests of students.
