‘Supergirl’ underperformed at the box office, earning far less than expected in its opening weekend. Peter Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of the studio, addressed the weak performance.“While ‘Supergirl’ did not meet our box office expectations, it is only one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran said in an interview with the New York Times.
Initial box office projections versus actual performance
Initial expectations had projected the film to earn less than $55 million Friday through Sunday at the domestic box office, according to the New York Times. However, a weak start to the weekend, with an opening of $18.2 million, lowered predictions as the weekend progressed. The final global total of $68 million fell short of initial and revised expectations for the film’s opening weekend performance.
The widest list of studies and upcoming releases
‘Supergirl’ represents the second film in the rebooted universe, after ‘Superman’. The third installment in the studio’s slate is slated for October and will feature a more modestly budgeted body horror film titled “Clayface,” suggesting a shift in budget allocation for upcoming releases.
