NEET 2026 exam: Hyderabad candidate caught cheating with phone hidden in washroom, now in police custody
A mobile phone hidden inside a washing tank in a school has led an 18-year-old to retake the NEET exam in the hands of police in Hyderabad. The candidate was caught using the phone to search for answers to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) which was conducted on Sunday at a government school in Ragannaguda under Adibatla Police Station limits.According to the police, the student planned his activities before entering the writing hall.
The phone is said to have been hidden before the exam
Investigators said the student, a resident of Achampet, arrived at the school around 7 AM, a few hours before the exam was scheduled.“According to his plan to commit fraud, the student came to the school around 7 am and put the phone in the bathroom,” said the police. The washroom was next to the school wall, which allowed him to get fresh air from the outside, officials said.At around 11am, just before the test, he allegedly went back into the laundry room, put the phone inside the zip cover and hid it in the tank. What makes this stand out is the fact that the test site was already looking for a lot of security. The police said the area was searched twice, once at 6 AM and at 11 AM. Followers were also shot before entering the recording room. However, the phone hidden inside the heating tank was not identified during those checks.
A long trip to the bathroom raises doubts
During the examination, it is said that the student complained of stomach upset and asked for permission to use the toilet. The laundry room was the only one in the center and it was a short distance from the main school building.According to the police, the housekeeper became suspicious of the man after spending a long time inside the house. After waiting for a while, the registration staff was sent to check on him.“The accused was caught in the washroom searching for answers on his phone,” the police said.
Phone seized, case registered
Following the alert, the police stationed at the site seized the device. An initial look at the phone showed that the interviewee was using Google Chrome to search for answers. Apart from Instagram, researchers did not find any other affected devices. When questioned, the candidate admitted that he had done it, police said.Based on the complaint filed by the school authorities, the case has been registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.The accused is still in police custody and further investigation is underway. This comes as examination authorities across the country are under pressure to strengthen security and prevent unfair practices in senior entrance exams.(with organizational inputs)
