NEW DELHI: The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced Geneva, Switzerland as the host city for the 2026 FIDE World Championship Match, where reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju will defend his crown against Uzbek challenger Javokhir Sindarov in what promises to be a historic clash.The World Championship match will be held from November 25 to December 15, with Gukesh and Sindarov set to be 20 years old when the competition begins, making them the youngest World Championship match in chess history.
Geneva chosen as a neutral place for the historic meeting
Announcing the place, FIDE interim president Viswanathan Anand he said that several countries showed a strong interest in staging the prestigious event before the governing body opted for a neutral location.“Several countries have expressed strong interest in hosting the FIDE World Championship Match, including India, the United States and Cyprus. After carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on a neutral ground and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historical tradition of bringing nations and cultures together,” said Anand.“We look forward to welcoming the global chess community to Switzerland. Local chess fans have the opportunity to experience world-class chess in person, while millions of fans around the globe can follow the battle online as the duel for the highest title in chess unfolds.”The announcement means that Switzerland will once again host a World Championship match, more than two decades after Brissago made the title clash in 2004.The president of the Swiss Chess Federation, André Vögtlin, hailed the decision as a landmark moment for chess in the country.“This is a truly special day for Swiss chess. Twenty-two years after Brissago, a world-class chess event returns to Switzerland. For us, this is much more than wonderful news – it is a defining moment for chess in our country, one that fills us with joy and motivation,” said Vögtlin.He added that hosting the event would provide a significant boost to the popularity of the game throughout Switzerland.“It is also a unique opportunity to raise the public profile of chess in Switzerland even more and to inspire new players to take up our sport. In the coming weeks, we will share regular updates on how we use this mega-event to strengthen the popularity of the ‘real game’ in our country,” he added.
The youngest World Championship match in history
The Geneva contest will pit two of chess’ brightest young stars against each other for the sport’s biggest prize.Gukesh will defend the title he won in Singapore in December 2024, when he defeated Ding Liren in the 14th and final classic game to become the youngest undisputed World Champion at the age of 18.Meanwhile, Sindarov secured his place in the title match by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus with one round to spare, adding another major achievement to his triumph at the 2025 FIDE World Cup.The championship game will consist of 14 classic games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points being declared the winner. If the scores are level after all 14 games, the title will be decided through tiebreaks.FIDE said further details regarding the tournament schedule, ticket sales, spectator access, media accreditation and accompanying events will be announced in the coming weeks as anticipation builds for one of the most anticipated World Championship matches in recent history.
