Cheran elected president of South Indian Film Writers Association; defeats VC Guhanathan by a comfortable margin

The filmmaker won the elections conducted by the association in Chennai and won the confidence of most of the voting members. His victory heralds a new beginning for the writers’ corps, which elected a new set of officers to lead the association for the upcoming term.

Cheran defeats VC in Guhana with a strong margin of vote

The elections, held in the Vadapalani Film Musicians Association Hall, were voted on from 8 am to 4 pm. According to The Hindu, Cheran, representing the ‘Namma K. Bhagyaraj’ panel, defeated VC Guhanathan of the ‘Thiraikkathai Mannan K. Bhagyaraj’ panel in the race for the post of president. Cheran got an impressive 279 votes out of 432 cast, and Guhanathan received 155 votes. The win confirmed Cheran as the new president of South Indian Film Writers Association by a convincing margin.

The election sees a healthy turnout and team sweep

The election had a great participation of the members of the association, who came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. In addition to the position of president, elections were held for 21 positions, including vice presidents, general secretary, treasurer and joint secretaries. The Cheran panel had a successful outing with Samuthirakani and Snekan also elected as vice-chairmen. There was a brief dispute over the voting rights of disqualified members before the polls, but the election process ended peacefully before the counting of votes later in the evening.

Cheran continues to balance film and leadership responsibilities

The win is expected to see Cheran taking a bigger role in addressing the scriptwriters’ concerns and strengthening the partnership in the coming years. Apart from his administrative work, the National Award winning filmmaker is still active in Tamil cinema. Cheran is recognized for his ability to tell an emotionally charged story through films like ‘Autograph’, ‘Thavamai Thavamirundhu’ and ‘Pokkisham’.Over the years, Cheran has collaborated with actors like Sneha, Mallika, Parthiban, Padmapriya, Saranya Ponvannan and technicians/musicians like Bharadwaj, Sabesh Murali, Ilaiyaraaja among others.
