Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor’s broken engagement continues to be one of the most talked about relationships in Bollywood. While neither the Bachchan family nor the Kapoor family have ever officially confirmed the exact reason behind the split, senior journalist Jyothi Venkatesh has now shared what she says was one of the main factors behind the wedding being called off.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh reviewed the much talked about engagement and speculations about its abrupt end.

“One of the main reasons was a prenuptial agreement”

Recalling the events, Jyothi Venkatesh said that even though Abhishek and Karisma got engaged, their wedding kept getting postponed before it was called off.“Karishma ke aur Abhishek ki engagement bhi ho gayi thi. For engagement ke baad shaadi ka din postpone hote gaya. Ultimately, they never got married.”When asked why the marriage did not happen, he replied, “Kai reasons log dete hain. One of the main reasons was…Babita was against the marriage.”He further stated, “Humne bhi suna hua tha. Prenuptial agreement sign karne ke liye majboor kiya tha mujhe.”Explaining the concept, he added: “My foreign agreement signed before the wedding… jiski wajah se all the property will go to the bride. For isiliye the marriage was cancelled.”Venkatesh also noted that the Bachchan and Kapoor families had shared a warm relationship before the engagement.“Bachchan family aur Kapoor family ke relationship bahut strong rahe hain. Usi wajah se woh rishton ko aur strong banana chahte the towards marriage.”

The engagement lasted only a few months

Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor officially announced their engagement in October 2002 during Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebrations. However, the engagement lasted only a few months before being called off in January 2003.Over the years, various media outlets have speculated about the reasons for the split. A widely reported theory suggested that Karisma’s mother, Babita, allegedly wanted a prenuptial agreement and financial guarantees for her daughter, due to concerns about the Bachchan family’s business situation at the time. However, neither the Bachchan family nor the Kapoor family have ever officially confirmed these claims or revealed the exact reason behind the break-up.Both ended their lives. Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai on 20 April 2007 and the couple welcomed their daughter Aaradhya. Karisma Kapoor married industrialist Sunjay Kapur in September 2003. They had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before their marriage ended in divorce in 2016. Karisma has previously described that phase of her life as deeply traumatic.
