Aamir Khan has strongly refuted accusations that he is a “brand ambassador for love jihad”, maintaining that religion has never influenced his family’s marriages. The actor, who married long-time partner Gauri Spratt in an intimate ceremony recorded on July 5, said that all of his marriages have been civil unions and that none of his partners converted. His comments come as his marriage to Gauri has sparked a political and religious debate online.
Aamir Khan says his family believes in inclusion
Speaking to Subhash K Jha for Deccan Chronicle, Aamir emphasized that interfaith marriages have long been a part of his family and stressed that religious conversion was never a condition for any of these relationships.Responding to the allegations, she said, “The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian.”The ‘Taare Zameen Par’ actor also clarified that neither his current wife Gauri Spratt nor his ex-wives Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao embraced Islam after marriage. “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even a Hindu, she is a Christian, and not even a practicing Christian. Life is getting more and more comical as time goes by.”For the uninitiated, Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002 before marrying filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The two separated in 2021, but continued to co-parent their son.
Aamir Khan’s third marriage also creates religious controversy
The actor’s latest comments come days after his marriage to Gauri Spratt became the subject of controversy. According to ANI, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Darul Ifta Muslim Staff, issued a fatwa against Aamir for his interfaith marriage, stating that it was not permissible under his interpretation of Sharia because Gauri is not a Muslim. In a video circulating online, the cleric said, “Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair Muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai.“The cleric further stated that a Muslim man who marries a non-Muslim woman commits a sin and added that those who refuse to recognize this as sinful would ultimately answer to Allah. So far, Aamir Khan has not reacted to the cleric’s statements, and his team has also remained silent.
