Director Dylan Meyer, in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, talked about her debut and her experience making it. She stated, “Frankie and Molly are co-dependent boneheads who have spent the last 10 years happily in a haze of weed smoke, co-signing each other’s bad choices and examining the increasingly insistent calls of adulthood.”‘The Wrong Girls’ has been in the works for a while, with Stewart serving as one of the writers. The actress also made her debut as a director recently with the film ‘The Chronology of Water’.While discussing how the film came to fruition, Meyer added that “The Wrong Girls was born out of my relationship with my best friend and co-producer Maggie McLean, the girl I couldn’t do anything without.” He also added that “It’s a love letter to capricious, chaotic women and the essential platonic partnerships that support them. The wrong girls may include giant squid, Danish hitmen, talking cats and supernatural abilities, but the emotional story and stakes are pure memory.”Stewart also talked about the projects and how he hopes people will enjoy the quirky comedy. Speaking to Interview magazine in 2023, the actress teased the project, saying: “Me and Dylan are writing a movie. It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really stupid. I think you’re going to like it.”For context, Meyer and Stewart have been together for seven years. The two were also officially married in April 2025.
Plot of ‘The Wrong Girls’
The plot revolves around two aimless young women who become aware of drugs and come across an experimental drug. After consuming it, however, they both develop telepathic abilities with each other and their cats. Due to a mistaken identity, the duo is thrown into a world of danger as a dangerous rival is also after the same drugs they have.Along with Stewart and Shawkat, the film also stars names like Seth Rogen, Geena Davis, LaKeith Stanfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Zack Fox and Tony Hale. It is scheduled to release on August 14, 2026.
