The plot of “The Odyssey” is different from Homer’s “Odyssey”.
The film revolves around Homer’s epic poem about the king of Ithaca, how he won the Trojan War and his journey home with his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus. Christopher Nolan took the story and made it his own by changing certain aspects of the story. One of the main focal points of the poem was Odysseus’ arrogance and overconfidence in his cunning and abilities. However, in Nolan’s film he realizes the gravity of the situation and the weight of his decisions that cost many innocent lives, and throughout the film he suffers from the guilt of taking part in the war. The ending of the movie is also changed and quite different to follow this theme. While in the poem, the story ends with Odysseus killing all of Penelope’s suitors and reclaiming Ithaca, ruling the city after 20 years with his family at his side. However, in the film, he and Penelope leave Ithaca to go into exile as a form of penance for their actions, while their son, Telemachus, takes over the kingdom and the throne.DISCLAIMER: Box office numbers and data in this article are collected from various public and industry sources.
