Christopher Nolan‘The Odyssey’ would have passed the three-hour mark if it weren’t for a technical limitation imposed by the same technology that the director chose to pioneer with the film. The Greek epic, which opens in theaters on July 17, 2026, has an official running time of 2 hours and 52 minutes, but Nolan originally envisioned a longer cut of the ambitious adaptation.According to Letterboxd, the director was unable to stretch the runtime beyond approximately 165 minutes due to the inherent limitations of the large-format cameras used throughout the production. The limitation comes from the physical specifications of 70mm film prints, which cannot exceed this length without requiring a complete rebuild of projection systems worldwide.

During an interview with the outlet, Nolan went to a booth in the audience to show the large-format film technology specialist the remaining limitation. “Over the years, I challenged him to make the plates bigger or create a clip system to hold the end of the film when it got a little bigger than the plate,” Nolan said, indicating his efforts to overcome technical limitations over time.
