Christopher Nolan ‘The Odyssey’ has lived up to its great pre-release buzz, recording a strong opening at the Indian box office.
The film starred Matt Damon at the top, it matched pre-release box office expectations of a Rs 20 crore opening in India. Despite its adult-only (A) rating, the film still managed to emerge as one of the biggest Hollywood releases of the year.
Box office collection ‘The Odyssey’
According to sacnilk early estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ collected Rs 20.76 crore on Day 1, with net collections of Rs 17.40 crore after playing in 8,413 shows across the country. The film posted an impressive overall occupancy of 48.7 percent, driven by demand for premium formats, especially IMAX screenings.
The English version ‘The Odyssey’ leads the collections
The film had a big release in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, but it was the original English version that accounted for the bulk of the collections.Early language estimates suggest that the original English version of the film emerged as the clear favourite, bringing in around Rs 13.75 crore nett to the film on its opening day. The Hindi dubbed version followed with approximately Rs 1.90 crore, while the Telugu version earned around Rs 1.10 crore and the Tamil version added an estimated Rs 65 lakh.
Occupation ‘The Odyssey’
The English release also witnessed the strongest participation, recording nearly 70% occupancy across 2,113 shows. In comparison, the Hindi version registered around 10 percent occupancy at 1,468 shows, while the Tamil and Telugu versions registered healthier 22 percent occupancy at 227 shows and 25 percent at 346 shows, respectively.
IMAX shows up in opening day numbers
As expected from a Christopher Nolan release, premium large format screenings proved to be a major draw. The film’s IMAX 2D English programs registered an impressive 73.86 percent occupancy.
“The Odyssey” among the biggest Hollywood releases in India
With an estimated net opening of Rs 17.40 crore, ‘The Odyssey’ comfortably joins the list of Hollywood’s biggest releases in India. The film currently follows “Avatar: Fire and Ash” which earned approximately Rs 18 crore nett and “Deadpool & Wolverine” which earned approximately Rs 21 crore nett.However, trade analysts point out that the final Day 1 numbers could still see a higher overall total as the film is expected to move closer to the Rs 20 crore nett mark if night shows and revised estimates are taken into account. The opening is especially notable considering the film’s A certificate.
‘The Odyssey’ registers a strong pre-sale
The film also benefited from outstanding advance bookings.With around 396,000 tickets sold in advance, The Odyssey ranks among the top four Hollywood advance sales in India, behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” (505K), “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (474K), “The Conjuring” (443K). It has also surpassed ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ (248K).
The eyes of the film premieres the big hit a global box office
‘The Odyssey’ has also started strongly internationally. According to early projections from Deadline, the film is expected to earn about $50 million from Friday and pre-screenings in North America, setting the stage for a three-day domestic opening of $117 million.If those estimates hold, the film will deliver Matt Damon’s biggest opening weekend as a lead star and also become the highest opening weekend for a live-action film in North America this year. The film will also become the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film of the year, surpassing ‘Backrooms’ ($81.4 million).The film is already Universal Pictures’ biggest opening weekend for an R-rated title, surpassing even ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ ($85.1 million).
