Shilpa ShettyBastian’s premium restaurant chain has long been one of Mumbai’s most talked about dining brands. The business caught widespread attention last year after the author Shobhaa De claimed that one of its Mumbai outlets made Rs 2-3 crore in a single night. While Shilpa later rejected these figures, her businessman husband Raj Kundra has now opened up about the company’s growth, revealing that despite its success, neither of them take any money out of the business for personal use.In a conversation with Jai Madaan, Raj spoke about the role Vastu plays in his business decisions, explaining that all Bastian properties undergo a thorough evaluation before launch. “We have. We have a fixed Vastu expert. We have a priest called Jaspreet, who checks each and every property before opening it.” Madaan then recalled visiting Bastian’s Dadar outlet when it had just opened and shared that he immediately felt the brand would become a huge hit.“When I first went to Bastian in Dadar, I looked at how Bastian’s ‘B’ started and told my daughter that this would become a great brand. I also told them that they would eventually sell their stake after giving it a huge valuation. I knew they wouldn’t stay there forever.” Raj admitted that he was surprised by her prediction. “This is unbelievable. It’s scary.” Madaan revealed another prediction he had made about the business model, saying the pair would continue to reinvest their earnings rather than take profits.“I also said they would make a lot of money but not save any of it. They would keep taking money from one place and investing it somewhere else. They wouldn’t take a dime home. Neither of them would get a salary or get any dividends. It would all go back into the business.” In response to his remarks, Raj confirmed that the business had largely followed this path.“Wow, not bad. The growth has been tremendous. Seriously, without investing a cent after the first outing, it was so successful that we kept opening one after another. Today, there are about nine bastions across the country. It all started with the first.” Madaan also predicted that Bastian would eventually establish a presence in Tier 2 cities as the brand continued to expand.The restaurant chain had earlier grabbed headlines after Shobhaa De opened up about what she described as her staggering earnings during an appearance on Mojo Story. “The kind of money in Mumbai is amazing. A single restaurant bills between 2-3 million rupees per night. On a slow night, it’s 2 million rupees, and on weekends it’s 3 million rupees. I went into the restaurant myself because when I first heard these numbers I thought they couldn’t be true.“He later identified the restaurant as Bastian’s. “It’s Bastian. The new Bastian. It’s spread over 21,000 square feet. It doesn’t even feel real. You walk in and wonder where you are. You have a 360-degree view of the city. People arrive in Lamborghinis and Aston Martins. You say so.”Shilpa Shetty, however, dismissed the viral claims when she appeared on Curly Tales, saying that the reported figures were far from reality. “I hope it’s true. I’m sure it will be true one day, so fingers crossed.” Shilpa entered the hospitality business in 2019.
