Anoop completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University before honing his leadership skills through the Executive General Management Program at Cornell University.His professional journey began at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, where he worked on the development of new products and learned the processes of one of the most respected car manufacturers in the world.He subsequently spent more than nine years at the Volvo Group, rising through a number of engineering leadership positions while working on global automotive programs. During this time, he gained the skills to help design complex automotive systems, lead engineering teams and understand how global platforms are built.After Volvo, he briefly led electric vehicle research at Accenture before joining Ola as Director of Product Development. By this time, he had spent more than 12 years in the world’s largest automotive industry.But one question kept asking him.If India was the largest tractor market in the world, why is no one building world class tractors especially Indian farmers?

Leaving a good corporate job to solve a rural problem

In 2023, Anoop decided to leave the comfort of corporate leadership and start from scratch.Along with former Volvo partner Ravi Kulkarni, he founded Moonrider in Bengaluru with a simple but ambitious vision: make agriculture profitable, sustainable and innovative.Instead of adapting foreign tractor designs, the founders decided to build a new platform from scratch for Indian farmers.Their goal was not just to replace diesel with batteries.They wanted tractors that would reduce operating costs, improve efficiency and future-proof Indian agriculture.

Building electric tractors designed for Indian farms

Moonrider tractors are available in several power ratings, including 27 HP, 50 HP and 75 HP models, to meet the needs of agriculture.The company has introduced several technological features that differentiate its products from conventional electric tractors.Among them is what Moonrider describes as the world’s first oil-cooled battery management system for tractors, helping batteries to perform better even in the harshest of farming environments.These tractors also feature an in-house battery, battery management technology, on-board updates, mobile app integration and support for future autonomous and control capabilities.Perhaps the most interesting thing happened in the early days of the company.From concept to production, the engineering team is said to have completed development in less than 40 days, the fastest time in the automotive industry. This technology has also been patented in India.

Strong investor confidence and thousands of prepared offers

Developing heavy-duty electric vehicles requires a lot of money, and the Moonrider has already attracted the attention of investors.The startup has raised about $8.38 million from investors, including pi Ventures and Micelio.It has also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for the supply of nearly 6,000 tractors over the next three years, giving an early boost to its business.Customer deployments have already begun, indicating a shift from technology to business operations.Commencing operations in one of the most capital-intensive sectors, these milestones reflect growing confidence in India’s agricultural energy sector.
