FIFA has confirmed the match officials for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup France against Morocco, with the appointment immediately attracting attention after the governing body selected an entire team officiating in the Argentina camp. The quarter-final in Boston will become the first match of the tournament to see all five officials on the field of the same country, a decision that has sparked a wide discussion among supporters despite FIFA following a model appointment that has been used throughout the competition. The heavyweight quarter-final, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, is scheduled for July 10 at Boston Stadium with kick-off at 1:30 am. IST, where the winners will move one step closer to the World Cup finals.
FIFA confirms full official Argentina kit
FIFA announced on Tuesday that Argentine referee Facundo Tello will take charge of the quarter-finals between France and Morocco. He will be assisted by his fellow Argentines Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Darío Herrera has been appointed fourth official and Christian Navarro will be the reserve assistant referee. The complete office team on the field is:
- Referee: Facundo Tello (Argentina)
- Assistant Referee 1: Juan Pablo Belatti (Argentina)
- Assistant Referee 2: Gabriel Chade (Argentina)
- Fourth official: Dario Herrera (Argentina)
- Reserve Assistant Referee: Christian Navarro (Argentina)
The appointments of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) were not confirmed when FIFA released the match officials. The appointment means that every official on the field for the match will come from Argentina, making it the first such example during the 2026 World Cup.
The historic appointment follows the existing FIFA office approach
Although supporters were quick to question FIFA’s decision, the governing body has consistently appointed referees and assistant referees from the same nation throughout the tournament. England’s dramatic 3-2 round of 16 win over Mexico, for example, was officiated by a trio of Australian referees, while Moroccan officials served as the fourth official and reserve assistant referee. Similarly, Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt in the Round of 16 was overseen by French referee François Letexier alongside two French assistant referees, with two additional French officials also involved in the VAR operation. FIFA made the appointments for France against Morocco on Monday, ahead of Argentina’s win over Egypt, meaning the selection was finalized before the latest controversy involving French officials emerged.
Fans are questioning FIFA’s decision amid recent refereeing controversies
Despite the established fixture pattern, the decision to assign an all-Argentine team on the field for a France match generated immediate reactions on social media, particularly given the lingering rivalry between France and Argentina after the 2022 World Cup finals. One supporter wrote: “All Argentine referees for a France match, FIFA is trying everything to rule the World Cup for Argentina once again.” Another post: “FIFA doesn’t hide it anymore. All Argentines, why don’t you bring Messi to check the VAR too.” A third commented: “FIFA is such a pathetic and corrupt organisation.” Another fan added: “You f**** frauds. This is clearly on purpose.” However, these criticisms overlook the fact that France also benefited from having a French refereeing team involved in Argentina’s round of 16 win over Egypt. That match became controversial after Egypt saw a second goal disallowed after a VAR intervention before scoring later on, while Mohamed Salah he was also denied a late penalty appeal shortly before Enzo Fernández scored Argentina’s winner. Egypt striker Mostafa Zico criticized the officiating afterwards, telling reporters: “The referee was not good. He was unfair. His injustice was clear. He persecuted us from the beginning of the match. He doesn’t want us to win.”
The quarter-finals revive the 2022 semi-final rivalry
Beyond the official discussion, the equipment itself carries a significant history. France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup before losing to Argentina on penalties in one of the most memorable finals in the tournament’s history. This year’s meeting comes after France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in a physical and sickening last 16 encounter in which Kylian Mbappé was repeatedly targeted, while Morocco progressed after defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Attention has also turned towards who could officiate the World Cup final. FIFA traditionally waits until the finalists are confirmed before selecting the referee, as officials cannot oversee matches involving their own country. Among the main candidates are the Polish Szymon Marciniak, who refereed the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, and the Dutch referee Danny Makkelie after the elimination of the Netherlands before the tournament. Another possibility is the Brazilian Raphael Claus, one of the 12 CONMEBOL referees in the tournament. Claus has already found himself at the center of World Cup controversy after sending off USA forward Folarin Balogun against Bosnia-Herzegovina before FIFA suspended him following the resulting one-match ban under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. That decision sparked criticism in the soccer world after US President Donald Trump publicly pressured FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the incident before Balogun was cleared to play against Belgium. The United States ultimately exited the tournament after a 4-1 defeat.
