There was a time when a law aspirant believed in one thing: if you didn’t crack CLAT and get into National Law University, your legal career would always have a ceiling. The local law college resulted in fewer opportunities, lower salaries, and years of waiting time. But the legal world has changed. Today, an LLB from an Indian university can open doors beyond district courts and traditional litigation. If you’ve always dreamed of practicing law in the UK – or eventually a career in law around the world – there’s an option that many students still don’t know about.
You didn’t get into NLU? It Doesn’t Mean Your Work Is Done
Let’s be honest. Not everyone goes to a top law school. Some students miss CLAT by few marks. Some cannot afford private universities. Many can pursue LLB from a state university or a recognized college. After graduation, they often start out as youth advocates earning Rs 15,000–Rs 30,000 per month, wondering if this is how their career will always look.If this sounds familiar, here’s good news.Your college name does not automatically determine whether you can become a lawyer in another country. In fact, Indian law graduates now have a recognized pathway to qualify as judges in England and Wales without completing the prestigious UK LLM.
The Process That Changed Everything: The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE)
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the new qualification system introduced in England and Wales in 2021.Instead of following the old apprenticeship system, prospective judges – whether from the UK or abroad – now qualify through the SQE system. This process has four main steps:
Many Indian graduates are surprised to learn that they do not need a UK LLM to qualify for the SQE.This alone can save lakhs of rupees.
Can Indian LLB Graduates Apply?
Yes.If you have completed your LLB from a recognized Indian university, then you are eligible to start the SQE programme. It doesn’t matter whether your degree is from NLU, a private university or a state law college. The administrator looks at whether you meet the criteria – not whether your college is ranked among the top institutions. However, eligibility is only the beginning.Passing the exam and creating the right information is what is needed.
What exactly are SQE1 and SQE2?
The SQE is divided into two tests.Image of SQE1This is a knowledge-based assessment. It tests subjects such as:• The Constitution• Contract law• Criminal law• Property law• Commercial law• Behavior• Legal and policy researchConsider it a test if you have enough legal knowledge to advise clients. In the past, passers have been passing 50-60% depending on the test.Image of SQE2These tests are very useful.Rather than just testing legal knowledge, it assesses international legal skills such as:• Customer inquiries• Empowering people• Writing the rules• Case analysis• Writing the rules• DiscussionCandidates who remove SQE1 usually do well here, with more frequent success rates than SQE1.
Do You Only Become a UK Lawyer When You Pass?
This is where most social media posts go astray.Just passing SQE1 and SQE2 does not automatically make one a practicing barrister. You must also complete Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) and meet the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s requirements.Only if you meet all these requirements will you be eligible to become a solicitor in England and Wales.
Do You Need an LLM Before Taking an SQE?
No.This is probably the biggest misconception.A UK LLM is not compulsory for SQE.Some students still choose to do an LLM because:• Helps them to comply with UK law.• Improving access to the Internet.• Makes visa preparation easier in some cases.• Can promote job applications. But in terms of qualifications, the LLM is optional – not compulsory.
Can You Get a Job at the UK’s Biggest Law Firms?
Yes.But not because you have passed the SQE.Large law firms look for several things:• Academic success• Legal actions• Good communication skills• Marketing awareness• Communication• Right to work in the UKPassing the SQE opens the door.It doesn’t mean that someone from any college will immediately earn a six-figure salary at Magic Circle or some other law firm. That still requires planning and competition.
What kind of salary can you expect?
Salaries vary greatly depending on the employer. Here’s a great idea:
After converting to Indian rupees, these figures often look very attractive compared to Indian entry fees. However, keep in mind that the cost of living in cities like London is very high.
What about Singapore?
This is another dream place for many Indian lawyers. The reality is a little different than what some influencers say.Being qualified in England and Wales can strengthen your reputation in Singapore, especially if you want to compete in international, corporate law or cross-border activities. However, you don’t just get the freedom to comply with Singapore law just because you’ve passed the SQE.Singapore has its own legal and licensing requirements. Many expatriate lawyers work there in international law firms, but the extent of their practice depends on local law.
What Can You Do in Hong Kong?
Again, not only.Hong Kong also has its own approval process.Being qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales can help because of the similarities between the legal systems. However, licensed foreign lawyers often have to meet Hong Kong’s requirements for conversion and acceptance before they can practice local law.
Is This Path Better Than LLM Abroad?
For most students, yes.If your sole aim is to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales, spending ₹30–60 lakh on an overseas LLM may not be necessary. The SQE method can be very cost effective. That said, every student’s situation is different. An LLM may make sense if your focus is academic research, immigration processes, networking or legal professionals.
Is SQE Important for Law Graduates in India?
If you ever felt that your legal career was over the day your CLAT results failed, think again. Many talented lawyers graduate each year from colleges that don’t make headlines. Many land good jobs because they focus on skills, qualifications and hard work rather than the title of their degree.SQE is not an easy shortcut, and it is not a guaranteed ticket to the highest paying job in the world. But it’s a real opportunity. If you want to prepare in depth, acquire legal skills and compete in the global legal market, an ordinary LLB in India can be the starting point for a global legal career – not the end of your aspirations.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal, immigration or career advice.
