After months of legal battles, delays in certification, hacking leaks and endless speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally been cleared by the Central Film Certification Board (CBFC). The film has been awarded an A certificate, ending one of the longest and most controversial censorship processes in recent Tamil cinema. Its certified run time is 3 hours and 3 minutes.Although the CBFC certificate has now been uploaded on the board’s official website, the detailed list of cut-offs is yet to be made public. According to industry reports, Vijay’s much-awaited farewell film is likely to hit the theaters on July 23 or 24. The makers have not officially announced the release date yet.Originally, “Jana Nayagan” was slated for release on January 9 ahead of the Pongal festivities and a few months before Vijay’s first election contest. The film was submitted to the CBFC on 19 December 2025, but instead of receiving certification within the usual timeframe, it was stuck in an unusually protracted approval process.The examining committee initially asked the officials to implement certain modifications. After making the requested changes and resubmitting the film, the producers said they were informed that the film was considered eligible for a U/A certificate.However, the certification process hit another hurdle after one of the examining committee members raised an internal objection, claiming that certain parts of the film could hurt public sentiments. After the complaint, the process was stopped and the producers were advised to send the film to the review committee. Around the same time, unverified reports suggested that the film’s release might influence Vijay’s political prospects ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which were scheduled for 23 April.On January 6, production banner KVN Productions moved the Madras High Court, seeking directions to expedite the certification process.As the delay stretched from weeks to months, the producers argued in court that the extended wait had jeopardized the planned release. Legal intervention, however, did not immediately break the deadlock. After almost a month and proceedings that reached the Supreme Court, KVN Productions finally withdrew its petition and chose to send the film to the review committee.
The ‘Jana Nayagan’ leak fueled the controversy
The controversy further intensified in April when a high-definition version of “Jana Nayagan” surfaced online even before the film had received CBFC certification.Tamil Nadu police later arrested several people in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor. During subsequent proceedings before the Madras High Court, prosecutors revealed that the pirated copy had been viewed by almost 1.2 million people before authorities managed to block access to it.The researchers alleged that the leaked version had been assembled using images copied from an editing facility before being distributed to hacking websites. Meanwhile, speculations about the film only intensified on social media.Just a few days ago, a fake CBFC certificate claiming that ‘Jana Nayagan’ had already been granted an A certificate went viral online. The X account that shared the document later admitted it was fabricated. It was later discovered that the fake certificate had been created by altering Vijay’s ‘Leo’ censor certificate, further fueling the confusion among fans.Release date rumors also gained momentum after overseas distributors hinted at a July 24 release. Other reports suggested that the makers were considering a July 23 launch based on their final strategy.
