Many government and private schools in Telangana are closed today, July 10, 2026, following a nationwide strike called by a coalition of student unions. However, the Telangana School Education Department has not declared an international academic holiday.The closing process varies from university to university. Although managements of several government schools announced the holiday in advance, the government schools did not receive any closure orders. Students and parents are advised to confirm the availability of classes directly with their schools before travelling.Private schools announce holidaysA large number of public schools and institutions will notify parents via text messages that classes will be canceled on July 10. The decision was taken by the management individually to avoid disruption of the movement of students and school activities during the bandh.Public schools and public educational institutions continue to operate without notice of the holiday. However, regular activities in some schools may be affected due to protests organized in different places in the state.Why is bandh called?The education bandh has been called by a joint platform of student organizations, including Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Students’ Federation (AISF), Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO).These organizations want to change several aspects of the education sector. Among their demands is scrapping a proposal to merge about 27,000 public schools into about 4,000 schools.They have also asked for a law to prohibit fees in order to deal with the collection of fees in public schools. Other demands include appointing a permanent education minister and filling the posts of teachers, Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs).School week scheduleFor private schools that declared a holiday on July 10, the closure will continue through the three-day weekend and the second Saturday of July 11 and Sunday of July 12.The Telangana government had earlier ordered that July 11 will be the working day for the government-run schools to recover the money lost earlier. Despite this, several business organizations continue with their holiday schedule based on management decisions.
