While chatting with the BBC, Serkis discussed his casting choices for the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ and defended his choice to hire an all-white cast. The actor credited the original writer of the book series, commenting, “Tolkien himself was heavily influenced by Norse mythology – there’s a lot of that feeling. The Shire feels very, very much like a very, very white, you know… They’re not too worried about what’s going on beyond the borders of The Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in.“

He further acknowledged that while he is well aware of the ongoing debate and the online backlash, he doesn’t want to care. He added: “Yes, there has been criticism. This particular film is kind of acknowledging that. But I don’t think we’re going to do a politically correct version of the film, just casting and branding.
