The 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup has reached its final week and after a month of thrilling matches in North America, England, Argentina, Spain and France have overcome every challenge along the way, with the biggest yet to come. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchanan avid follower of the tournament, revealed that the match schedules have derailed his own daily routine. In a lengthy and candid post on his Tumblr blog, he opened up about his World Cup fever and the thoughts that go through his head about the young players getting the chance to represent their nations.
Amitabh Bachchan on ‘unfair decisions’ in the tournament
Beginning his post, he wrote: “Timelines and the idea of time gone wrong… the reason of course is WC 2026… the times to see are strange and make our days even worse.. but we see that we rejoice we have regrets.. and we see with great anguish the unfair decisions that are taken by one and not by the other.. and we are moved by the victories of those Countries that we never imagined would reach the WC challenge. Most of the recognized and well-known soccer countries have lost with great regret.. this is surprising.. but elated by the fact that those we never imagined have fought and won recognition. They keep saying ‘may the best team win’ … but we never know who the best team is until the results come out.”He further added: “Most of the teams that play each other for their country, have played in competitions and other championships and the players have been common … so many who play for England also play in other championships, with members of the England team and know each other well and know their game. Friendly off the pitch, competitive because they represent their country. it’s a strange situation, but the game goes on. As in IPL, players play for different team franchises and become each other’s competitors… but when they all come together for selection, they are ONE, they need character.”“The rapidity of the change for the better is a boon…young people see it and benefit…old people express surprise and wonder why this didn’t happen when they were young…and now it’s too late… late to witness what else will follow in the coming years… we won’t be there, but our young will and that’s a satisfaction… of sorts. There is little sun around where I live and I need to soak in as little as I can.. I haven’t seen the Sun for months,” he concluded.
Amitabh Bachchan observes Argentina’s rocky run
Argentina’s last two outings continued to surprise, especially after the win over Egypt a few days earlier. Despite Switzerland playing for more than an hour with just ten men, Lionel Scaloni’s side needed extra time for a third straight knockout match as the European side repeatedly exposed cracks in Argentina’s defense before Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez finally earned their place in the next round. In another place, the FIFA World Cup could be on the verge of another significant change, just one year after expanding to 48 teams, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that a proposal to expand the tournament to 64 nations for the 2030 edition will be discussed.
