Ronald Koeman has resigned as Dutch boss following the Oranje’s shock exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Morocco, ending his second spell in charge after the Dutch suffered their first ever exit from the tournament.The 63-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands lost 3-2 on penalties to Morocco after a 1-1 draw in their round of 32. It marked the first time the Dutch failed to reach at least the Round of 16 in World Cup history.
Koeman announces emotional departure
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Koeman admitted the disappointment of the World Cup had weighed heavily on him as he confirmed his resignation.“I have made the decision to end my time as coach of the national team of the Dutch national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. We did not succeed. No one is more disappointed about this than I am. As a national coach, you carry that responsibility. I always felt it, and I always will,” Koeman wrote.The former Barcelona manager also reflected on how recent years had changed his priorities beyond football.“In addition, the last few years made me understand once again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless.”Koeman added that leaving was not an easy decision after working closely with the team for many years.“Precisely because I have worked so closely and intensively with this coaching staff and this group of players for such a long time, it was not an easy decision to make. I am grateful and I want to express my sincere appreciation for the dedication shown by everyone involved in the Oranje during my two periods as head coach.”He also revealed his desire to spend more time with his family.“I decided that now is the right time to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren. At this moment, it feels like the right decision and more natural.”
Historic World Cup disappointment
Koeman’s resignation followed one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. The Netherlands, who scored 10 goals in the tournament during the group stage, were held 1-1 by Morocco before losing in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.It was the third consecutive World Cup in which the Dutch were eliminated via penalties and ended a remarkable record of reaching at least the Round of 16 in each of their previous 11 World Cup appearances.During his two spells in charge, Koeman led the Netherlands to Euro 2021, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, while also guiding Oranje to the UEFA Nations League final in 2019. He oversaw 64 international officials and led the team to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
KNVB supports Koeman’s decision
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that Koeman had informed the federation that he would not continue beyond his current contract.Technical director Nigel de Jong paid tribute to the outstanding coach, saying: “Ronald has dedicated himself with full conviction over the last few years and made an important contribution to the Dutch national team. On behalf of the KNVB, I want to thank him very much for that.”The federation also condemned the racist and discriminatory abuse directed at several Dutch players after the defeat, emphasizing that “racism and discrimination have no place: not in football, not online and not in our society”.
