The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced the Better Marks Rule as part of the new Class 10 board exams, which will be implemented from the 2026 academic session.According to the new system, students can appear for two board exams in one academic year. The first exam is compulsory for all Class 10 students; the second test is optional. It is designed for students who want to improve their marks or clear up the courses they failed. This year also, all the exams have been conducted. Students who have taken both exams should know the rules for good marks.The main advantage of the Better Marks Rule is that CBSE only takes into consideration the marks obtained in each subject while preparing the finals.
How good law works
Students will appear for the first time in the regular board examination which is held at the end of the academic session. After the results are declared, those who are not satisfied with their scores can choose to appear for the second board exam in the selected subjects.If a student takes both the exams, CBSE will compare the marks obtained in each subject. The highest score will be listed in the final market.For example, if a student scores 72 marks in Mathematics in the first exam and 85 in the second exam, the final papers will show 85. However, if the student scores less in the second exam, the results of the first exam will remain unchanged.This means that students can take the second exam without worrying about losing the marks they have already earned.
This rule applies separately to each subject
The Good Marks Rule is used for academic purposes. A student can improve the marks in one subject while maintaining the original result in another subject. For example, if the second attempt results in good marks in Science but low in English, CBSE will record the leading marks in Science and keep the original score in English.Therefore, the final papers will contain the best results obtained for each subject in the two examinations.
A move to reduce exam pressure
The Better Marks Act, which is an important part of the new CBSE statement, is fully aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.The organization aims to reduce the stress associated with a single high school exam by giving students another opportunity to succeed within the same year.In the past, students who wanted to improve their grades or failed in a course, often had to wait for additional exams or the next level of education. The new system allows them to improve their performance without losing valuable time.
