ROHTAK: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday urged Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) to position itself as a hub for research-based solutions to the challenges faced by the Delhi-NCR region, stressing that universities must align their research with the needs of society to remain globally relevant.In contact with students at the university, Lt. Gen. Sandhu said that the changing world requires problem-based research that focuses on local, regional and international issues. He advocated for strong collaboration between universities and industry, saying such collaboration would boost innovation and enhance the global profile of Indian higher education. “The future reputation of Indian universities will be defined by international networks and fundamental research,” he said.Describing MDU as an organization that can do more, Lt. Gen. Sandhu said the location in the National Capital Region provided opportunities for research and innovation. He urged the university to focus on important areas such as bioscience, green energy, environmental management, pollution control, health care and agriculture. Regarding India’s aging population, he said healthcare for the elderly would be seen as a major challenge and called for systematic research to find effective solutions. He also urged the university to invite leading national and international experts to hold regular discussions with students and teachers to promote excellence in education.Lt. Gen. Sandhu also praised the university’s green space, describing it as an example of environmental protection.Previously, Vice Chancellor Prof. Milap Punia welcomed the Lieutenant Governor and highlighted the recent achievements of the university in education, research and sports. He said MDU’s alumni have made significant contributions to the military, education, industry and scientific research, while its athletes have won honors at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. He said that the university is developing research related to problems, especially in the medical and medical sciences, and is planning a comprehensive strategy to promote education and research. Dean of Academic Affairs (DAA) of MSU Prof. AS Maan and other university officials also gave their views during the discussion.
