Much of Cape Verde’s success has been built on the remarkable performances of veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose tournament has turned him into one of the World Cup’s breakout stars.

The 40-year-old produced another outstanding display against Saudi Arabia to preserve the clean sheet. He first denied Mohamed Kanno in first-half stoppage time, comfortably gathering a dangerous header before producing an excellent diving save in the 66th minute to keep out Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat’s effort. In stoppage time, with the qualification in the balance, he made a crucial last stop to deny Abdullah Al-Hamdan in the 92nd minute.

The veteran’s performances throughout the tournament garnered global attention, helping him garner more than 16 million followers on Instagram during Cape Verde’s historic campaign.Watching proudly from a luxury suite was his mother, Ana Candida Évora, who waved a small Cape Verdean flag throughout the match. It was only his second appearance at the tournament after visa issues prevented him from attending his son’s unforgettable seven saves against Spain earlier in the group stage.

From outsiders to World Cup giant killers

Few gave Cape Verde a realistic chance of surviving a group containing Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia ahead of the tournament.
