Kunal Kemmu has made his debut as a reality show host with ‘Alliance’, and in a candid conversation ahead of the show’s launch, he drew striking parallels between the on-screen alliance game and the very real ones that shape careers in Bollywood. Let’s take a look at what he has to say.
Kunal Kemmu on why alliances are fundamental to human existence
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kunal Kemmu explained the concept behind ‘Alliance’ and why it resonates beyond a reality show format. He said, “There’s a family you’re born into, and there’s a family you make or choose, like friends who become family. And sometimes family relationships don’t last. Human existence is based on alliances. In the past, if you couldn’t be a hunter or gatherer, you had to make alliances to survive. Alliances are what you need to survive,” he said.

When the conversation turned to the notorious existence of camp and groupism in Hindi cinema, Kemmu did not shy away from addressing it head on.The actor said: “It exists. It’s not the only way things happen, but it happens in any field. You may feel good or bad, but the fact is it’s going to remain. It’s human nature. If I like someone and I want to work with them, you can’t make me not work with them. It may be disadvantageous to someone else, but unfortunately it’s the way to go.”

In the same conversation, Kunal Kemmu also reflected on how the film industry has evolved and yet continues to prioritize factors beyond pure talent.He shared, “The camps hote the, ab thode kam hain because tab kuch hi families thi jo films bana rahi thi (There were camps. Now there are less because earlier only a few families used to make films). The corporations came. But even today, business is not always decided by talent. It’s decided by some math, which doesn’t make any sense.”He further added: “That’s why we started making projects and not films. Luckily, time teaches everything. Now people won’t watch films. They tell us they need content, not projects.”
