Meet Uday Kiran Kandagatla, a graduate of IIT Madras BS program who mastered Python, Data Science and Machine Learning and landed a high paying Systems Engineer job at TCS.

Employers today are looking for candidates who can solve real problems, work with data and communicate effectively.This is what Uday Kiran Kandagatla says helped him get the position of Systems Engineer (Prime) at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). A student of the IIT Madras BS Degree Program, Uday believes that the program’s combination of academic principles and hands-on projects gave him the confidence and skills needed to begin his professional career.Building a solid foundation beyond the classroomReflecting on his educational journey, Uday said the program provided him with the education that is the backbone of today’s technology.He studied Computational Thinking, Python, Statistics and Data Science, which helped him better understand problem solving and critical thinking. According to him, the Diploma in Data Science proved to be very important because it helped him explore the principles of Machine Learning more deeply.Rather than focusing on theory alone, the program encourages students to understand how technology can be applied to real-world problems.Learning by solving real-world problemsOne of the biggest takeaways from the program, Uday says, was the opportunity to work in industry.He highlighted the Business Data Management (BDM) project and the Machine Learning project as major learning experiences. These projects require students to interact with business owners, collect and analyze data, identify trends and present their findings.The experience helped him to strengthen not only his skills but also communication, teamwork and research skills – qualities that employers highly value along with education.According to Uday, these practical activities helped him prepare for professional opportunities.Why projects matter as much as marksAs technology continues to advance, employers are placing more emphasis on candidates demonstrating problem-solving skills rather than relying solely on academic achievement.Uday’s journey reflects this change. Along with learning programming and data science concepts, he gained the ability to apply these skills to real-world situations, making him business-ready before graduation.His appointment as a Systems Engineer (Prime) at TCS also shows a great lesson for students: although strong academic principles remain important, active learning, project skills and the ability to communicate solutions can improve career prospects.For students preparing for careers in the arts, Uday’s story is a reminder that the most valuable learning often occurs when classroom knowledge is applied.
