AR Rahman’s nephew and National Award winning composer GV Prakash Kumar is making his full Hindi debut with Aanand L Rai’s ‘Nayi Naveli’ starring Yami Gautam. The composer, known for more than 120 films in Tamil and Telugu, says language is no barrier for him.

After making his mark as a composer in Tamil and Telugu cinema, GV Prakash Kumar is all set to make his first major Hindi soundtrack with ‘Nayi Naveli’, a project backed by Aanand L Rai’s production house and directed by Balaji Mohan. The musician, who is also AR Rahman’s nephew, opens up about the music score for the Yami Gautam Dhar-starr, the timeless charm of lip-synced songs and the rumors swirling around their remuneration.

Speaking to Variety India about directing his first full Hindi score for ‘Nayi Naveli’, Prakash Kumar retraced his journey in Hindi cinema and shared his excitement for the project. He said, “I got a chance to work in ‘Gangs of Wassepur’ because Anurag Kashyap was a very good friend of mine. But it wasn’t a complete Hindi debut for me. As for ‘Nayi Naveli’ under Anand L Rai’s banner, I am composing all the songs. It will be very interesting. I’m sure the songs will turn out great. Yami Gautam is the lead. We all know how she expresses emotions beautifully. So my songs are in good hands. ‘Nayi Naveli’, which is directed by Balaji Mohan, will be something to look forward to.”

GV Prakash Kumar on composing in Hindi: ‘Language doesn’t matter’

When asked if creating music for a Hindi film feels different from working on a Tamil or Telugu project, Prakash Kumar was quick to dismiss the notion of any distinction. He said, “For me it’s no different from a Telugu or Tamil film. Every score is a challenge for me. The language doesn’t matter. I compose every score as if it were my first.”
