Many entrepreneurs dream of building a successful company.Sujoy Chakravarty, Ravi Mehta and Biman Chattopadhyay did just that, sold it to a global technology giant, and then chose a path that was less obvious—building quantum computers in India.Instead of following the usual path of success, the three soldiers spent months learning the world’s most difficult techniques. This idea eventually led to the creation of Quanfluence, a Bengaluru-based startup that is now one of India’s few companies developing high-performance computing systems.Their story is not about business. It is about passion, deep engineering and the belief that India can develop frontier technologies globally.

He gave up successful jobs to solve a serious problem

Before entering quantum computing, innovators had already created impressive projects in the semiconductor industry.Sujoy Chakravarty, Ravi Mehta and Biman Chattopadhyay worked together for over ten years at Texas Instruments, acquiring expertise in chip design and semiconductor engineering.In 2012, he founded Silicon and Beyond, a high-speed semiconductor intellectual property (IP) company. Six years later, the company was acquired by Synopsys, one of the world’s leading electronics manufacturers.For many startups, this would mark the pinnacle of their entrepreneurial journey.Instead, he began to ask a much bigger question:Can India build its own commercial computer?Six months in the library changed everythingAfter the purchase, the three did something unusual.Instead of rushing to another resume, he spent about six months learning about various computer technologies.He researched superconducting computers, ion-trap systems and photonic computing before suggesting that photonics offer the most practical solution for India.Unlike superconducting quantum computers, which require near-zero temperatures, photonic quantum computers operate at temperatures using light and light.That decision became the foundation of Quanfluence.To promote the project, he brought together experts from academia and industry.Professor Anil Prabhakar of IIT Madras, whose research on Optical Ising Machines formed the basis of the company’s technology, joined them as a co-founder. Professor Sandeep Goyal of IISER Mohali contributed to the quantum information technology, while former Arista Networks head of product Aditi Vaidya joined as Chief Product Officer.

Building quantum technology in Bengaluru

Quanfluence’s technology takes a different approach than most computer companies around the world.Instead of relying on individual photons like qubits, its system uses the electricity of groups of photons, a method that the company believes offers greater reliability and scalability.Its Optical Ising system currently supports 128 connected switches, while future models are expected to solve even larger problems.The startup has already started selling its technology through the cloud, paying enterprise customers using a cloud-based platform.
