Ahead of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 results, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the admission matrix for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), giving lakhs of aspirants a clear idea of the seats that will be available during the counseling process.The seats, issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on July 14, cover all undergraduate MBBS seats except those offered by Institutes of National Importance (INIs). It has been sent to all medical colleges and the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which conducts counseling for the All India Quota.This year’s matrix shows that 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available in 823 medical colleges. Of these, 1,27,028 are additional seats from the existing number, while 9,911 are newly sanctioned seats, reflecting the expansion of postgraduate medical courses.
The new medical colleges have 2,400 seats
The increase includes 2,400 MBBS seats in 25 newly established medical colleges.According to the Commission, seven new government medical colleges have 400 seats, while 18 new medical colleges offer 2,000 seats.The rest of the increase comes from an approved increase in the number of people taking part in existing medical colleges.
Private colleges have more seats
While government medical colleges continue to outpace private institutions, private colleges account for a significant share of MBBS seats this year.The government medical schools have 441 institutions with 63,296 seats, including 61,185 renovated seats and 2,111 newly approved seats.Private medical schools consist of 382 institutes with 73,643 seats, of which 65,843 are renovated seats and 7,800 are newly approved.These figures show that a large part of this year’s energy growth has come from the private sector.
Karnataka leads the MBBS seats
Among the states, Karnataka continues to have the highest number of MBBS seats, with 15,395 seats in 75 medical colleges.Uttar Pradesh has 88 medical colleges, the highest in the country by the number of institutions, offering 14,000 seats. Tamil Nadu has 78 colleges offering 13,999 seats, while Maharashtra has 86 colleges offering 13,099 seats. Telangana has 66 medical colleges with 10,250 seats.The state wise distribution is expected to make the counseling decisions when the NEET UG results are announced.
MARB sets a deadline of seven days for bank confirmation
Along with the seat, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board has ordered all medical colleges that have received approval for a new MBBS college or increased intake to provide the necessary Electronic Bank Guarantee within seven days of public notice.The certificate must be submitted to the Director, MARB. Information should be shared through the email addresses provided in the notification. The Board has made it clear that the Letter of Authorization will be issued only after the Electronic Bank Certificate is received and found to be in good standing.
The seat matrix is subject to change
The Commission has explained that the official seat is not final and can be changed if necessary following the decisions of the Appeals Committee or any other competent authorities.Each evaluated seat will be posted on the website of the National Medical Commission and will be considered by the Medical Advisory Committee and government advisory authorities during the approval process.The notification also places the responsibility on the counseling authorities to follow the approval process. If there is any discrepancy in the notified seat, it should be referred to the Medical Review and Evaluation Board for clarification.The board has ordered that the advisory committees should not always admit more than the number of seats approved and notified by the MARB, making the published places the basis of MBBS in the academic session 2026-2027.
