Veteran actor Zeenat Aman has extended its support to educators and climate activists Sonam Wangchukcalling on the government to initiate dialogue as it continues its indefinite hunger strike in Delhi. Sharing a heartfelt note on Instagram, Aman expressed his concern for Wangchuk’s health and urged the authorities to engage with his demands through peaceful discussions. Posting a photograph of Wangchuk on Instagram, the actor said his thoughts were with him as he continued his fast in the national capital.Referring to reports of his deteriorating health, Aman emphasized his own call for dialogue with the government. “My thoughts today are in the nation’s capital where @wangchuksworld is entering the 17th day of its indefinite hunger strike.”He also cited reports that Wangchuk’s condition had worsened and recalled his response when people urged him to end the fast. “Don’t ask me to end my fast. Ask the government why they won’t even dialogue.”
Zeenat Aman highlights the contributions of Sonam Wangchuk
In his post, Aman described Sonam Wangchuk as the founder of SECMOL, the creator of the Ice Stupa initiative, an education reformer in Ladakh and a committed environmental activist. He also noted that Wangchuk inspired the character of Phunsukh Wangdu, played by Aamir Khan in ‘3 Idiots’, while acknowledging the worldwide recognition he has received for his work.

Calling for constructive engagement, the veteran actress urged the government to open talks with Wangchuk in accordance with her request.“Regarding Mr. Wangchuk’s wishes, I implore the Indian government to open dialogue on this matter which concerns the future of all of India. We must not become a society that sits by and watches one of its greatest minds being sacrificed. India has a long history of peaceful protest; those in power are obliged to meet this protest with peaceful dialogue.”Ending his note, the veteran actor wrote, “My respect and best wishes to all.”Zeenat Aman joins a growing list of public figures who have spoken out about Wangchuk’s protest. Before, actor Omi Vaidyaknown for playing Chatur in ‘3 Idiots’, shared an emotional video in support of the activist.
Abhay Deol’s appeal
Following calls from Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, writer Arundhati Roy and filmmaker Sanjay Kak expressing concern for Sonam Wangchuk’s well-being, actor Abhay Deol has also extended his support through an Instagram post. The actor shared a photograph of Wangchuk from the site of the protest along with a broken heart emoji, signaling his solidarity with the activist as concerns for his health continue to mount.
About the protest
According to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is leading the agitation, Wangchuk has reportedly lost nearly 9kg since he began his indefinite fast. The protest, which began on June 20, centers on alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Wangchuk joined the demonstration on June 28.The organization has demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the families of NEET aspirants who allegedly committed suicide in the wake of the exam controversy. CJP has also announced a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20, coinciding with the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
