As AI transforms industries, experts say powerful software, data and cybersecurity skill will remain the basis of skill work Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way industries work, creating new job opportunities and redefining existing roles. However, industry leaders believe that tomorrow’s developers will need more than just mastering AI tools to succeed. He says continued job growth will depend on knowing the basics of computer science, including programming, data analysis, cybersecurity and problem solving. Speaking at the School of Technology Management & Engineering (STME) Orientation Program 2026 at SVKM’s NMIMS Chandigarh, the engineering experts urged the engineering students to focus on building a strong technical foundation rather than chasing long-term technology.
On top of the AI buzz
Although AI dominates the conversation in all sectors, experts have seen it work in large-scale ecosystems that require skilled professionals in multiple fields. “Don’t chase beauty. Chase practicality. Software development will never end. AI may be a buzzword today, but the real opportunity lies in data, cybersecurity and trust,” said Jagjit Singh, Head – Data & Analytics (Public Services), Tata Consultancy Services. He also emphasized that investment in AI is followed by greater investment in data protection, privacy, security and trust, making these areas important to aspiring professionals.
Technology must be compatible with evolution
Speakers at the program agreed that technical skills alone will not define the successful professionals of the future. They highlighted the growing importance of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and the ability to keep learning as technologies evolve. Sandeep Malik, General Manager (Quality), HCL Technologies, encouraged the students to be curious and see failures as opportunities to learn and innovate instead of obstacles. The message reflected the growing trend in the industry as employers seek professionals who can adapt to changing technology while solving real-world problems.

As AI is deeply integrated into sectors such as security, healthcare and government services, making informed decisions is becoming an important technical skill as well. Nikhil Mangal, Deputy General Manager at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), highlighted the growing trend of AI in defense technology while stressing that advanced technology must be driven by culture and national responsibility. Likewise, Manpreet Singh, Product Head & Delivery at Fastway Transmissions Pvt. Ltd., described AI as an enabler rather than a substitute for human skills, adding that technology, communication and critical thinking will continue to differentiate the best professionals.
Preparing students to meet industry expectations
Educational institutions are also changing their approach to meet the needs of the industry. In welcoming the new group, Prof. (Dr.) Jyotsna Singh, Campus Director, NMIMS Chandigarh of SVKM, said the university aims to align classroom learning with industry expectations through experiential learning, innovation and continuous engagement. He said the first batch of engineering graduates recorded 100% placement, reflecting his emphasis on preparation and employability.
Long-term job creation
As AI continues to evolve, experts believe that the technology landscape will reward engineers with strong skills and a willingness to constantly improve. Rather than seeing AI as a replacement for basic knowledge, students were encouraged to see it as one of many tools that can enhance technology. The consensus among industry leaders was clear: programming, data, cybersecurity and lifelong learning will remain important to engineering jobs, even as emerging technologies will reshape the workplace.
