Getting into Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar is supposed to be a little easier from the 2026-27 academic session. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 50 additional seats for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), taking the annual intake of the college from 200 to 250.The approval comes through a Letter of Permission (LoP) issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, as per PTI.
The size of seats follows the NMC review
The Department of Health and Medical Education said the increase is aimed at promoting medical education and healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir.Officials said the decision follows a review conducted by MARB under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023. With the latest approval, additional seats will be available from the upcoming academic year 2026-27, PTI reported.
The second increase in two years
The latest expansion comes a year after GMC Srinagar got approval for 20 additional MBBS seats.According to the department, the increase in consumption is expected to create more opportunities for medical professionals while increasing public medical education.Officials said the latest approval will increase the number of colleges as Jammu and Kashmir continues to increase the number of government medical courses. The additional seats will be available for admission starting with the academic session of 2026-27, according to PTI.
