Three Prelims failures, one Mains comeback: How Tripti Kalhan turned disappointment into AIR 199 in UPSC
Meet the UPSC aspirant who failed Prelims three times, Mains once, took a year off – and returned with an AIR 199

For every UPSC success story that makes headlines, there are years of unseen problems behind the final results. Many failures, self-doubt, changing paths and starting over are often part of the journey. The story of IAS officer Tripti Kalhan is one such example. Before securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 199 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2023, he had already faced four unsuccessful attempts and had given up preparation for a whole year. His journey is not just about clearing India’s toughest test. It is learning when to rest, when to change and when to start again. For thousands of UPSC aspirants, Tripti’s experience is a reminder that setbacks do not mark the end of the road.

A dream that started in school

Tripti Kalhan hails from Gonda in Uttar Pradesh. His desire to become an IAS officer started during his school days when he saw the District Collector attending a public function as the chief guest. The honor associated with the job left a lasting impression, and with constant encouragement from his father, the dream gradually became a career goal. After graduating in 2017, he chose to prepare for the Civil Services Examination through self-study instead of joining a coaching institute. He built his preparation on systematic study, analyzing advanced techniques and maintaining consistency for several years.

Before the four obstacles

However, the road was more difficult than expected.Tripti’s first three attempts ended at the Preliminary Examination stage. In his fourth attempt, he finally crossed the Prelims hurdle but could not clear the Mains exam. For many aspirants, four consecutive upsets would be enough to advance. Tripti chose another way.Instead of reappearing immediately, he took a break for a year UPSC preparation. During this time, he re-evaluated his study plan, identified areas of improvement and made a major change in his approach by changing his elective from Public Administration to Anthropology. The break also gave him a chance to rebuild his confidence before returning to preparation with a new mindset.

AIR 199 is a subject for candidates

His rigorous approach paid off when he secured an AIR 199 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2023.Looking back on her journey in an interview with Indian Masterminds, Tripti admitted that she prepared for UPSC without considering any other career. “I never made it to UPSC with Plan B, so it was do or die,” he said.Interestingly, although he himself follows this path, his advice to those who want it today is different. Based on his experience, he now recommends having a Plan B, saying that it helps reduce unnecessary stress and allows candidates to prepare clearly and confidently.Tripti also appreciates the game that changed her mind. As a former professional athlete, he learned to see each defeat as a solution rather than a failure. Even when family members repeatedly questioned his efforts, the unwavering support of his father and close friends helped him focus on his goal.Today, the journey of IAS officer Tripti Kalhan is a reminder that success in UPSC rarely follows a straight path. Sometimes, the most important part of the journey is not avoiding failure but finding the courage to learn from it, change course when necessary and keep moving forward until the goal is achieved.Disclaimer: This story is based on publicly available information and statements shared by the person concerned.
