Mohanlal applies under Kerala Ivory Amnesty Scheme; Intended to declare wildlife articles

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has approached the Kerala forest department under the state government’s amnesty scheme to declare ivory items in his possession.According to a report in The Hindu, the move is aimed at regularizing wildlife items and ensuring the legal protection afforded by the scheme. The amnesty program allows eligible individuals to declare wildlife items that were not previously registered. Successful applicants may receive immunity from legal action subject to the provisions of the scheme.

The Forestry Department records the actor’s statement

Reports on the same website say that as part of the process, a senior Forest Department official recently visited Mohanlal’s residence in Kochi and conducted an inquiry under Section 41 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.During the investigation, the actor was questioned about the origin of the ivory items, when he acquired them and why they had not been declared earlier. The consultation is part of the verification process before any decision is taken on the application submitted under the amnesty scheme.

The High Court had canceled the title certificates

The matter received fresh attention after a division bench of the Kerala High Court delivered its verdict in October 2025. The bench canceled the title certificates that had been issued to Mohanlal earlier. He also set aside the government order that had allowed him to keep the ivory items.According to the High Court, the 2015 government notification had never been published in the official gazette. The certificates of ownership and the permission granted for the possession of the ivory articles lost their legal validity.Even after the High Court’s decision, the Forestry Department did not initiate criminal proceedings for the alleged illegal possession of the wildlife items.

Court proceedings are still pending

The legal dispute involving the actor has not yet reached a conclusion. Mohanlal has already moved the Kerala High Court challenging a court order that rejected the state government’s request to withdraw the prosecution against him.Apart from this request, another allegation presented by the actor to dismiss the criminal process is also pending before the Court.
