Planning to study in India? The Bureau of Immigration shares registration, visa extension rules for international students

The Bureau of Immigration (BoI), Government of India, has issued a new reminder to foreign nationals arriving in the country on a Student Visa, detailing the registration requirements and procedures that will allow them to continue their studies without interruption. In a post on X, the Bureau shared that obtaining a Student Visa is only the first step. Students must also meet the post-arrival requirements within the allotted time frame to ensure that their stay in India remains valid.

Registration within 14 days

According to the advisory, all foreign nationals entering India on a Student Visa must register at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival.Registration is done through the e-FRRO portal by applying for the “Registration” function.Once the application is approved, students are issued a Registration Certificate or Residence Permit (RC/RP), which serves as proof of their residency in India. The agency advised students to carefully check the expiration date mentioned in the document, as it determines the validity of their residence permit.

Time to apply for extension of RC/RP

The agency also made it clear that if the Student’s Registration Certificate or Permit is about to expire while the Student Visa is still valid, they should apply for “Registration Extension” through the e-FRRO portal before the permit expires. This extends the validity of the residence permit without having to renew the visa immediately.

Student Visa extension

For students whose Student Visa is about to expire, the Bureau said they should apply for the “Visa Extension” application on the e-FRRO portal. This allows eligible foreign students to continue their education in India without affecting their legal immigration status. The guidance distinguishes between extending a Certificate of Registration or Residence Permit and extending a Study Visa, reminding students that all documents have a validity period and must be checked independently. As the movement of international students continues to grow, the Bureau’s advice is a reminder that timely registration and renewal of immigration documents remains an important part of studying in India.
