Since then, another sequel was released, but plans for a third film never came to fruition. However, the project finally got the confirmation it needed earlier this year. Not only that, but according to recent updates, a script for ‘Princess Diaries 3’ has been made, and the author of the original book is pretty excited about it!

Meg Cabot, who wrote the original series of novels that inspired the 2001 film, recently revealed that she has seen the script for the third film! While chatting with The Hollywood Reporter, Cabot shared that the script is ready and that she was very happy with the final version.She said: “I read a script and it was amazing. I told them not to send it any more, because I love it so much. They don’t like it when you tell people what’s going to happen yet. So I said, ‘You better not send me any more scripts!'” “Fingers are crossed that’s what they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I’m 100 percent behind it,” he concluded.

The sequel has been in development for years, following the release of the sequel in 2004. However, in 2016, following the death of director Garry Marshall, the project was put on hold. In 2022, it was picked up again and confirmed to be in development. Years later, in 2024, Anne Hathaway revealed that she would reprise her role as Princess Mia in the film.Speaking with PEOPLE in April, the late Marshall’s daughter, Kathleen Marshall, shared more details about the upcoming project. She shared that “We’re pushing it. I mean, there’s just an amazing team in place. So it’s coming. It’s coming.” Kathleen also expressed excitement to be involved in anything related to “The Princess Diaries” franchise, revealing that she and producer Debra Martin Chase often exchange emails about the film’s development.Hathaway also touched on the subject while promoting her film ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ in April. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he stated, “One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it.” He also talked about what fans would want from the film, sharing, “is that the expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to knock it out of the park.”
