Failed NEET three times, no JEE status; created a new project and got a job as a Data Scientist
Three failed NEET exams. There is no JEE rank. Uncertain age. For Sanjay B, the way to work was not what he thought. Today, he works as a Data Scientist in Pune, but before he got there, he spent years dealing with disappointments, job rejections and self-doubt. Sharing his journey on LinkedIn, Sanjay said that Class 12 almost broke him. Between March 2020 and November 2021, he stayed away from social media and his cell phone, focusing on his studies. “Festivals passed, the weather didn’t matter. I learned through everything—alone, tired, and scared,” he wrote. His first two NEET attempts in 2021 and 2022 dented his confidence. He said he struggled to tell his parents how he felt because he was hoping to get a hospital seat in the state. When his friends went to college, he felt that he was left behind. “I felt abandoned and like a burden. But I didn’t give up,” she wrote.With six to seven months left to try again, Sanjay began looking for a job. He said he was turned down several times, including a job as a delivery boy at BigBasket. After attending five interviews, he got a job as a salesman at SBI Cards, where he continued to work on exam preparation.

Sanjay said balancing work and studies was not easy. He carried books to the office, studied in his spare time, took unpaid leave before being tested and changed his approach to preparation. His efforts helped him to score more than 450 marks in his third NEET examination.Although the results were good, financial problems prevented him from trying again. Instead, he enrolled in the IIT Madras BS program in Data Science and graduated in October 2022. Today, he works as a Data Scientist in Pune.Explaining why he decided to speak about his journey, Sanjay said many students asked him about his NEET experience and the IIT Madras programme. He believes that students should know that there are other options if things don’t go as planned.He also urged NEET and JEE candidates not to judge themselves based on the entrance exam. “Your worth is not defined by a test,” he wrote. He encouraged students to talk to someone if they were struggling and reminded them that “your story is not over.”
