NEW DELHI: Captain India Shubman Gill returned to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, reclaiming the world No. 1 spot after six months by overtaking New Zealand. Daryl Mitchell in the latest update released on Wednesday.Gill now leads the rankings with 801 qualifying points, replacing Mitchell, who moves to second with 794 points after missing New Zealand’s recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies.
Gill returns to the top after Mitchell’s reign ends
The ICC confirmed that Gill’s rise came after Mitchell’s absence from the Black Caps’ last ODI assignment in the Caribbean.“There was some change at the top of the latest ODI rankings following the end of the recent series between the West Indies and New Zealand as the absence of Black Caps right-hander Daryl Mitchell saw Shubman Gill return to become the No.1 batsman in 50-over cricket,” the ICC said.The governing body also noted that “Mitchell had held the first bill since January of this year.”Gill’s return to the top highlights his remarkable consistency in the 50-over format, where he has established himself as one of the game’s premier batsmen. The India skipper had previously occupied the No. 1 position before being overtaken by Mitchell at the start of the year.

India continue to dominate the upper reaches of the ODI batting rankings, with Virat Kohli maintaining third place with 767 evaluation points, while Rohit Sharma remains fourth with 758 points.The latest rankings mean India now have three batsmen in the top five, highlighting the depth of their batting unit ahead of another busy ODI season.India also boast two more batsmen in the top 20, with Shreyas Iyer occupying the 13th spot and KL Rahul ranked 18th.

Scholtz, Greaves among other great drivers
Away from the batting charts, Namibian spinner Bernard Scholtz climbed five places to seventh in the ODI bowling rankings after an impressive performance during the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series involving Nepal and the Netherlands in Utrecht.In the Test ranking, West Indies allrounder Justin Greaves enjoyed significant gains after his historic performance against Pakistan in Trinidad. Greaves jumped 21 places to 48th among Test bowlers and also rose eight places to ninth in the all-rounders’ rankings after producing five consecutive wicket hauls.There were also gains for Jayden Seales, who climbed to 24th among Test bowlers, while pacer Mohammad Abbas climbed to 17th. Babar Azam moved up four places to 15th in the Test batting rankings after registering his 32nd Test half-century.
