The biggest talking point of the day was Gulveer Singh, who became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m after producing a brilliant silver medal performance. Harjinder Kaur also continued India’s weightlifting success by finishing second in the women’s 69kg category, bettering the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham Games four years ago.
The Indian boxing team maintained their excellent run, with Jadumani Singh, Preeti Pawar and Priya Ghanghas all reaching the semi-finals to ensure the nation at least bronze medals. While a few athletes bowed out in boxing, swimming and athletics, there were heartening performances in para-swimming and lawn bowls as India’s medal hunt continued in multiple disciplines.
At the end of Day 6, India occupied the ninth spot in the medal standings with 12 medals, two gold, seven silver and three bronze – and will now turn their attention to another action-packed schedule on Day 7.
Several Indian athletes will be in contention for medals on Wednesday, including Sanjana in the women’s 77kg weightlifting final, long jumpers Sreeshankar Murali and Lokesh Satyanathan, shot putter Manpreet Kaur and steeplechase runner Parul Choudhary. The boxing ring will once again be busy with six Indians, including Sachin Siwach, Sakshi Choudhary, Ankush Yadav and Jaismine Lamboria, aiming to secure semi-final berths. India will also have representation in swimming, para athletics, para swimming and lawn bowls, making Day 7 another crucial opportunity to top the Commonwealth Games medal table.
