While several celebrities welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25, actors Ranveer Shorey and Tara Deshpande stood out for having a different opinion than the popular one. As many public figures praised the student movement led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Sonam Wangchuk and protesters across the country, the two actors questioned the circumstances surrounding Pradhan’s exit.Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Ranvir shared a GIF soon after the resignation was made public and criticized the government’s handling of the situation. “And in a swift move, the Modi government has failed to win over any of its enemies and disenchant many of its supporters. #masterstroke,” he wrote, with clapping emojis. After an X user asked him if he thought Pradhan should not have resigned NEET paper leaks controversy, Ranvir explained his stand. Referring to the protests organized by the CJP, he said the resignation should have come earlier rather than after sustained demonstrations.“Yes, but I should have done it before the streets were held hostage. Now it seems the supporters won’t be heard, but the ‘cockroaches’ in the streets will!”Actor and model and former MTV VJ Tara Deshpande also expressed her disappointment at the development. Sharing a post by Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, he highlighted Pradhan’s contributions during his years in public office.“Sad. A minister who served many portfolios over a long career. He was instrumental in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which extended LPG connections to millions of low-income households,” read part of his tweet. He went on to recognize his work in various ministries, arguing that his achievements extended far beyond the controversy surrounding the NEET exam.“He oversaw reforms like the direct transfer of PAHAL benefits for LPG subsidies and the Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP). He saw the steel industry through tough times in the pandemic. Even in education if you look at the work he did outside the NEET paper leaks, he was solid. His act of resignation should be respected.”Instead, a large part of the film industry has publicly supported the ongoing movement, both online and on the ground. Actors like Prakash Raj, Shabana Azmi and Hanumankind were present at the Delhi protests, while Sonakshi SinhaVijay Varma and several others expressed their support through social media. In Mumbai, Gurfateh Pirzada, Pratibha Ranta, Shalini Pandey and many more joined the demonstrations. After Pradhan’s resignation, social media was flooded with posts applauding CJP protesters, Sonam Wangchuk and Gen Z for maintaining the movement over alleged irregularities in the NEET exam and the document leak controversy. Celebrities included Kamal Haasan i Chinmayi Sripaada were among those who also shared their views on the developments.
