It is often regarded as a passport to the most sought-after branches of engineering in the country, lucrative careers, and international opportunities. But when Rajesh Gopakumar achieved AIR 1 in 1987 IIT-JEE, he made a decision that surprised almost everyone around him. Instead of choosing Computer Science or another engineering path, he chose to study Physics. Nearly four decades later, his work has helped shape modern science, earned him the highest honors in the scientific world, and inspired a new generation of Indian researchers. A AIR 1 who chose interest over convention

Born in Kolkata in 1967, Rajesh Gopakumar grew up with a strange interest in understanding how nature works. Unlike many students who only focused on preparing for exams, he loved science and math books. Stories from his childhood show that he spent many hours reading beyond the school curriculum, searching for information that interested him rather than memorizing book chapters. That passion turned into a high academic achievement. In 1987, he found out All India Rank 1 in IIT Joint Entrance Examinationone of the most competitive engineering entrance exams in India. For many students, such a position would mean an obvious choice: Computer Science or other advanced technical courses at an IIT. Rajesh chose another option. He enrolled in Combined M.Sc. Physics program at IIT Kanpurprioritizing his love of basic science over the expectations of a normal job.

Journey from IIT Kanpur to Princeton

His decision made it just the beginning. After completing his master’s degree at IIT Kanpur in 1992, Rajesh moved Princeton Universitywhere he did his Ph.D. under the Nobel Prize winning scientist David Grossone of the world’s leading physicists. Working in such intellectually challenging environments allowed him to explore some of the most profound questions of modern science—questions about space, time, gravity and the building blocks of the universe. Following Princeton, he joined them Harvard University as a postdoctoral researcher, where further great success awaits him.

A discovery that bears his name

While at Harvard, Rajesh Gopakumar teamed up with a famous string expert Cumrun is dead. Together they made something that today is called Gopakumar-Vafa Duality,along with Gopakumar-Vafa Invariants-an idea that has been very powerful in string theory and scientific mathematics. Choosing India over easy options abroad

After establishing himself internationally, Rajesh Gopakumar had the opportunity to continue his career overseas. Instead, he chose to return to India. He spent more than ten years at Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) in Prayagraj, where he continued his research by teaching young scientists. In 2015, he became a leader Director of the International Center for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS)part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bengaluru. Under his leadership, ICTS has grown into one of India’s leading research institutes in mathematics, physics and interdisciplinary science, attracting scholars from around the world.

Honor earned by scientific ability
