IIT Guwahati confers degrees to 2,265 students on 28th convocation and grand recognition event

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) awarded degrees to 2,265 students at its 28th Convocation ceremony held on July 12, 2026. The graduating class included students from graduate, post-graduate, doctoral and research programs in several disciplines.The event was attended by Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), as the chief guest. Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Vice President, Board of Directors, IIT Guwahati, presided over the event, while Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, gave the conference report.

Students receive medals for academic excellenceSaptarshi Mukherjee, pursuing B.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, received the President of India Gold Medal after securing the highest Cumulative Performance Index among eligible students.Atri Chattopadhyay from B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Engineering was awarded Dr. Gold Medal. Shankar Dayal Sharma for his outstanding achievements, including education, foreign service and humanitarian work.Praneel Bhattacharya, M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, received the Governor of Assam PG Gold Medal, while Sarthak Kapoor from B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering received the Governor of Assam UG Gold Medal. The institute also awarded 18 students of the Institute Silver Medals for academic excellence.

The Institute develops research methods and innovationsSpeaking to the students who have completed the course, Prof. Devendra Jalihal said, “while our graduates are starting different careers, be it higher education, industry, business, leadership, management, or education, I offer my deepest appreciation to each of them.He said that IIT Guwahati had published 2,478 research papers this year and continued to expand its research facilities, incubation facilities and industry-leading processes.The agency is currently working on 290 research and consultancy projects worth Rs 300 crore. It has also launched an M.Tech program in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in line with the National Education Policy 2020.Focus on research, international cooperation and businessThe chief guest Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman advised the graduates to continue their studies and use their knowledge to help society. He said, “In the age of AI, the real differentiator will be deep knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to define meaningful problems rather than just create solutions.”IIT Guwahati has partnered with institutions in the United Kingdom and Japan in areas including artificial intelligence, healthcare, research and student mobility. The organization has also supported startups in the healthcare, agritech, security, clean technology and fintech sectors.With over 26,790 graduates over 32 years, IIT Guwahati currently has 455 faculty members and over 8,600 students across its programs.
